Objectives
The first thing you need to understand about writing, when it comes to copywriting is it is writing with a purpose. You have a defined purpose every time you sit down and create any piece of copy, no matter where it is on the funnel. There is some purpose, there is a reason you are putting those words together. There is some action you want your reader to take and all of your writing has to be geared to that objective. This isn't a boring essay or some tick box writing assignment this is writing that is designed to create an effect in the readers mind.So there are a few questions you need to ask yourself.
Who are you talking to?
The first question is who are you talking to. This is extremely important when you are sitting down to do your copywriting because you want to make sure that your writing can match up to them and impact them on a deep level. In this world of copywriting whoever can impact the reader the most wins. They will have a competitive advantage and the more detailed you can be about the type of people that you are trying to help, the more narrow you can define your target market their desires, their life situations, their values , their beliefs all that stuff the deeper you will be able to impact them the closer you will be able to tailor your words to their internal and mental representations. The better you will be able to build a relationship with them and the greater you will be able to impact them overall and help them actually make a change.
Where are they now?
An important thing to understand when trying to figure out who you are talking to and where there are right now emotionally, mentally, their desires ect.. you need to understand what level of awareness they have and what level of sophistication. What I mean by level of awareness is most people go through their lives in the world and they either know their problems or they don't.
What actions do i want them to take
Once we understand who we are talking to and where they are now, we need to sit down and define the objective that we are trying to accomplish with whatever piece of copy we are writing. To understand this we have to realize there are a great over arching exam of objectives that we are trying to achieve with our business, with just at a bare minimum amount of time once we have grabbed their attention.
Steps they need to experience
What are the steps the reader needs to experience inside of my copy to go from where they are now to taking the action i want them to take? What do they need to think? What do they need to hear? What do they need to imagine? What do they need to believe in order to take this define action. You plan out all those things and then you write you words in the middle so that when someone pops up on that sales page or ad or whatever piece of copy your writing, they experience all those emotions and thoughts and feelings and it helps them decide to take the action you want them to take.
